If You Let It

Life could be so beautiful
If you let it
Love could come so easy
Don’t you get it?

We tremble like pebbles in a quake
In the shadows of our fears
Allow a coup of anxiety to seize our mind
And reduce our joy to tears

We build walls and reinforce them
Since we feel insecure
But still see threats in every change
One can never be quite sure

So we forget to watch the silhouettes
Of birds dancing in the twilit sky
As we patch up the cracks in our walls
Through which an insect may fly

And we quail to show others we care
For thoughtfulness and affection
May one day curdle and sour
Amidst the pain of failure and rejection

But life could be so beautiful
If you let it
Love could come so easy
Don’t you get it?

If we tore down our walls
And built bridges instead
If we listened more to our heart
Not just our anxious head

Then no walls would block the lovely view
And we’d be open to connection
We’d feel the summer-sweet wind on our face
And give and receive affection

True, we open ourselves to attack
But with our newfound allies and friends
We can keep the peace together
And, for any damage, make amends

For love and beauty of all kinds
Are the lifeblood of our world
We must deepen our ties to one another
And let our joy of nature unfurl

Because life could be so beautiful
If you let it
Love could come so easy…
I think you get it.
